  1. I just saw Etienne! and thought it was ok, not great. One of those "indie" movies where everyone is nice and things are simple. Girls are pretty, guys are unattractive yet still heroic. It didn't really grab me so much. It also seemed marketed to the ever popular hipster audience, in the sense that the young adults depicted in the film were in bands but didn't seem to have any real problems beyond insecurity and a little bit of lonliness/relationship drama.
Interestingly, when asked about his intent, the filmmaker said that part of what he tried to do is make a movie that was innocent and not political, not corrupted (it sounded like that is what he meant) by reality of how the world actually works.
The other things he talked about were mainly related to the economics of making the film and selling the film to a festival audience. He seemed comfortable discussing PR and marketing as if that is a normal way to relate to art and joked about his (lack) of a career by saying he is looking for a job as an editor. In short, he seemed nice and the movie not terrible filmicly, but it didn't really engage me on any level. I guess I'm not really comfortable with that kind of "innocence". He framed it as a kids movie type idea--that he started out wanting to make a movie like the Muppet Movie that wasn't violent--but then maybe he just took that kind of "cutenss" and had this child-like adults stumbling around having "random" unlikely things happen to them.
    I enjoyed Caveh Zahedi's role.

Alice was great. A rich work of art. Totally glad I saw it. I saw part of the movie in between....but it was slow and I was cold and tired so I left. I caught part of the Muppet Movie, which was fun. All the little kids in the aisle was fine, but the adults thought that made it ok to talk on the cell phone DURING THE MOVIE! I'm sorry I don't care if you are a parent, that is NEVER OK!

  2. I also watched the All Tomorrow's Parties film. Lots of good footage, definitely one to see in the theater. It made it look like so much fun to be there.
